South Africa’s reappointment of Ebrahim Rasool as its ambassador to the United States is more than a diplomatic misstep; it is a calculated insult to the principles of international stability, security, and integrity. Rasool’s well-documented associations with extremist organizations, his history of corruption, and his divisive rhetoric render him unfit for the role of a diplomat. This decision is not just a lapse in judgment by the African National Congress (ANC) but a disturbing reflection of its ideological alignment with entities that undermine global peace and security.

The ANC invited different faith leaders to offer prayers. The Christian, Muslim, and Rastafarian faiths were represented. A representative from the traditional African religion was also invited. Leaders of the Jewish community have not been invited since October 7th 2023.
Ties to Extremism: A Deeply Troubling Record
Rasool’s affiliations with terror-linked organizations, such as Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, are not mere allegations but established facts. His public praise for Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, a notorious figure in radical Islamist circles, underscores his ideological leanings. Al-Qaradawi, an advocate of suicide bombings and virulent anti-Semitism, is an emblem of extremist ideology.
Rasool’s description of his time with Al-Qaradawi as “the most memorable days” of his life reveals a troubling admiration for a man synonymous with hate and violence. Even more alarming, Rasool’s alignment with Hamas goes beyond rhetorical support. In 2019, he participated in a Hamas-aligned fundraising event alongside senior Hamas operative Basem Naim. At this event, Rasool openly urged attendees to “equip brothers and sisters for a war that is surely coming,” language that unmistakably endorses violence. Given Hamas’s designation as a terrorist organization by the United States and many other nations, Rasool’s participation in such events raises serious questions about his suitability as a diplomat.
The Al-Qaradawi Connection
Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, exemplifies the intersection of ideology and terrorism. Known for justifying violence, including suicide bombings against Israeli civilians, and for his hateful rhetoric against Jews, Al-Qaradawi’s influence has fueled extremist movements globally. He founded the Union of Good, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization that funneled financial support to Hamas, further cementing his role in promoting global instability. Rasool’s open admiration for Al-Qaradawi and his active participation in organizations linked to this extremist figure highlights a deeply ingrained ideological alignment. Washington must interpret Rasool’s connection to Al-Qaradawi as a clear red flag, one that cannot be ignored without risking the erosion of global counterterrorism efforts

A Career Marred by Corruption and Manipulation
Rasool’s tenure as Premier of South Africa’s Western Cape province was characterized by scandal and dishonesty. His involvement in the infamous “brown envelope” affair, where he allegedly paid journalists for favourable coverage, exemplifies his willingness to subvert institutions for personal gain. An ANC internal investigation corroborated these allegations, leading to his removal from office. Such behaviour is incompatible with the integrity required of a diplomat, especially one representing a nation in its dealings with a superpower like the United States.
A Pattern of Anti-American Hostility
Rasool’s history of undiplomatic behavior extends to his inflammatory rhetoric against the United States. His comparison of former U.S. President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler, a gratuitous and offensive analogy, demonstrates a lack of respect and decorum. By posting an image of Trump holding a Bible alongside an image of Hitler with a similar caption, Rasool exposed his contempt not just for an individual leader but for American institutions and values. This hostility is not limited to one administration. Rasool’s broader disdain for American policies and principles risks alienating the United States at a time when bilateral cooperation is essential. His reappointment jeopardizes South Africa’s ability to navigate critical issues, from trade negotiations to geopolitical alignments.
Speaking From Both Sides of His Mouth: A Trojan Horse Revealed
Rasool’s recent Facebook post is a perfect example of his duplicity and lack of credibility. In the post, he claims to be “poised for credentialing with President Biden and then the Inauguration of President Trump.” This bizarre and contradictory statement exposes his pattern of speaking out of both sides of his mouth to suit his agenda. On one hand, he portrays himself as a diplomatic envoy committed to building bridges, while on the other, he harbours a clear and demonstrated disdain for American leadership and values.
Rasool’s track record shows that he is far from a neutral diplomat. His inflammatory rhetoric against former President Trump, including comparing him to Adolf Hitler, reveals a deep bias that undermines any claim to impartiality or professionalism. His alignment with extremist ideologies and his opportunistic approach to diplomacy makes it clear that he is not interested in fostering genuine cooperation but in advancing a divisive and dangerous agenda.
By reappointing Rasool, South Africa has sent a Trojan Horse into Washington, a figure who does not represent goodwill or partnership but rather ideological subversion and hostility. His actions and words consistently contradict the values of diplomacy, and his presence in the United States undermines efforts to build trust and mutual respect between the two nations.
South Africa’s Broader Failures in U.S. Relations
The reappointment of Rasool comes at a time when South Africa’s relationship with the United States is already strained beyond repair. Recent reports have highlighted South Africa’s growing alignment with adversaries of the U.S., including Russia. In June 2023, The New York Times reported that U.S. lawmakers were increasingly concerned about South Africa’s support for Russia during its war in Ukraine. This alignment is seen as a betrayal of democratic values and has led to calls for a reassessment of U.S.-South Africa relations.
Furthermore, a bill introduced in the U.S. Congress in mid-2023 sought to review and potentially reduce trade privileges extended to South Africa under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). This proposal followed South Africa’s controversial actions, including hosting Russian naval drills and its refusal to condemn Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, which alienated American lawmakers at a critical time. Fox News, reporting on the developments during this period, highlighted the escalating tensions, emphasizing that the United States viewed South Africa’s stance as not only problematic but outright hostile. Despite months having passed since these events, the damage to U.S.-South Africa relations appears to be irreversible, further compounding the strain introduced by Rasool’s reappointment.
South Africa has already squandered its credibility with the U.S., and Rasool’s reappointment only compounds this diplomatic disaster. The ANC’s mismanagement of foreign policy, its overt alignment with authoritarian regimes, and its unwillingness to uphold democratic principles have left the U.S. South Africa relationship in tatters. Sending a figure like Rasool, with his track record of divisive rhetoric and extremist associations, only signals further disregard for rebuilding trust and cooperation.
The ANC’s Mockery of Diplomacy
The African National Congress has demonstrated its disdain for constructive relations with the United States by championing a campaign to rename Sandton Drive to Leila Khaled Drive. Leila Khaled, a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, has been associated with terroristactivities, including hijackings. The ANC’s first deputy secretary general, Nomvula Mokonyane, has openly stated that the renaming campaign is a deliberate act of defiance. She recently declared, “We want the United States of America embassy to change their letterhead to Number 1 Leila Khaled Drive. We are sending a message that they cannot dominate us and tell us what to do. It must be in their face, it must be in their computers, in their letterheads.” This provocative rhetoric and symbolic gesture underscore the ANC’s willingness to antagonize a key global partner rather than work toward mutual understanding. It is a blatant mockery of diplomacy and a direct insult to American sensibilities, further eroding any semblance of trust or cooperation between the two nations. Such actions make it clear that South Africa’s government is not interested in repairing relations but is instead intent on pushing an ideological agenda that undermines its own international standing.
Differentiating Between the ANC and the South African People
While the ANC has demonstrated hostility and poor judgment in its handling of foreign relations, it is critical for the United States to differentiate between the ANC leadership and the South African people. The sentiment held by many South Africans does not align with the ANC’s rhetoric and actions. Ordinary South Africans are acutely aware of the importance of maintaining constructive relationships with global partners, including the United States, and many feel frustrated and disillusioned by the ANC’s provocative and counterproductive policies. South Africa’s diverse society encompasses a wide range of political views and aspirations, many of which are not represented by the ANC’s current leadership.
Civil society, opposition parties, and private sector leaders in South Africa have frequently voiced their concerns about the ANC’s international posturing and its impact on the nation’s global reputation. These voices represent a constituency that values democracy, economic growth, and cooperation with the global community. The United States must engage with these groups and foster relationships that go beyond the ANC’s divisive politics. Supporting South African civil society, encouraging dialogue with opposition parties, and emphasizing shared values can help strengthen ties with the South African people. By clearly distinguishing between the ANC and the broader South African populace, the United States can reaffirm its commitment to democracy and human rights while holding the ANC accountable for its actions.
The Clear and Present Danger
Ebrahim Rasool is not merely an unsuitable choice for ambassador; he is a dangerous figure whose presence in Washington poses a direct threat to U.S.-South Africa relations and global security. His documented ties to extremist organizations, history of corruption, and anti-American rhetoric make him an unacceptable representative of any nation, let alone one seeking constructive engagement with the United States. Washington must take a firm stance against Rasool’s appointment. Allowing him to serve as ambassador legitimizes his extremist connections and sends a perilous message: that ties to terrorism and corruption can be overlooked in the pursuit of diplomacy. For the sake of international stability and its own security, the United States must reject Rasool and demand that South Africa appoint a representative who embodies the values of peace, integrity, and mutual respect.
The ANC must recognize that its decisions have consequences. Persisting with Rasool’s appointment risks irreparable damage to South Africa’s global reputation and its vital relationship with the United States. It is time for South Africa to prioritize accountability and integrity over ideological allegiance before it finds itself increasingly isolated on the world stage.
